Associate Hiring

What our newest lawyers have to say:

“I’ve always thought of Friday as a conservative firm with excellent, driven talent…I’ve been affirmed in that belief. I think from top to bottom, our firm has some of the finest lawyers in the region…The firm provides a consistent flow of challenging work from top-notch clients. Partners give associates a great deal of responsibility from day one. It’s a wonderful place to learn the art of working through a transaction.”

“I think the attorneys at the firm made me choose the firm. A law firm is only as good as its attorneys, and I think our attorneys are the best in their fields and are great mentors to learn from.”

“I have been surprised at the amount of responsibility I have been entrusted with. I thought, as a new attorney, there would always be someone looking over my shoulder, but that is not the case here. Although the attorneys are always there for help and guidance, I am given a lot of freedom in my practice. I think this is giving me more experience and opportunities than I would have otherwise.”

“The best things about working at the firm are the attorneys, staff, and clients. All of these people make the Friday firm a great place to work.”

Law Clerks

We have a long and successful history of employing law students during both the academic year, and through our summer associate program. Our hiring process requires that the student has completed their first year of law school. Our goal for law students is two-fold:

  • To allow law students to experience the practice of law through challenging work and
  • To be exposed to all aspects of the firm’s practice through observing our firm’s attorneys in action.

Law students are not assigned to particular practice groups of the firm unless they request otherwise, but instead are given assignments as they arise from attorneys practicing in a variety of areas.

At least once a week during the summer the law students hold a luncheon to which they invite practicing attorneys in the firm in order to learn more about various specializations. On occasion, outside speakers, such as trial and appellate judges, are asked to join the law students for lunch. Voluntary social events allow the law students and firm attorneys to get to know each other in a very casual atmosphere.

Our goal is to employ exceptional law students as law clerks for the firm during law school, and to subsequently offer them positions with the firm as associates.

Associates

We hire associates with the objective of having them eventually become our partners, and the percentage of associates who become partners is high. Associates are treated as if they are a permanent part of the firm from their first day, particularly through client exposure and training. We believe that our young associates are not only the future of the firm, they are the future trusted advisors of our clients. We invest our time to train them not only in the business and practice of law, but also in client relationship management and in community service.

Many of our associates join us after a judicial clerkship or additional education beyond a juris doctorate. In those cases, we may offer credit toward becoming a partner, in recognition of those experiences.

Applying for a Position

On-campus interviews are customarily conducted at both campuses in Arkansas, and laterals and law students from around the country are encouraged to apply for a position at any time of year by contacting the partner in charge of recruitment, Brian C. Smith. If you prefer to work in one of our Northwest Arkansas offices instead of Little Rock, please note that in your correspondence.
