Our History

Friday, Eldredge & Clark traces its roots to 1871, when attorneys George E. Dodge and Benjamin S. Johnson formed a partnership representing the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern Railroad—one of Arkansas’s first major corporate clients.

What began as a small firm focused on serving the railroad industry steadily evolved into a practice with a much broader reach. Over time, the firm became the first in Arkansas to develop specialized practice groups dedicated to taxation, bonds, securities, litigation, commercial law, and labor law. This innovation eventually expanded into more than 50 practice areas, enabling the firm to represent clients in virtually every industry.

Throughout its history, the firm has been guided by enduring values: a commitment to learning our clients’ industries, maintaining the highest standards of legal excellence, and serving both the profession and our communities. These principles remain at the heart of our identity and continue to shape the way we practice law.

A Legacy of Leadership

Leadership has always played a defining role in the firm’s growth and character. Notable managing partners include Herschel Friday (1974–1994), William H. Sutton (1994–2005), Byron Eiseman, Jr. (2005–2012), and J. Shepherd Russell III (2012–2018). Both Eiseman and Russell remain active in the practice today.

Today, under the leadership of Managing Partner Price C. Gardner, Friday, Eldredge & Clark continues its tradition of client service with more than 90 attorneys and 100 staff professionals working from offices in Little Rock and Rogers.
